HCPL-0631

The Broadcom HCPL-0631 is a high-speed dual-channel optocoupler with a logic gate output, providing galvanic signal isolation for digital data links up to 10 MBd. Fabricated with an AlGaAs LED and an integrated photodetector driving a Schottky-clamped transistor stage, the device combines low propagation delay with high input-to-output isolation in a compact SOP-8 surface-mount package. It operates from a single 5 V supply and interfaces directly with TTL, LSTTL, and CMOS logic families. The isolation voltage rating is 3.75 kV RMS, and closely matched channel-to-channel delay skew supports synchronized multi-channel designs without external tuning components.

Typical applications include industrial automation—such as PLC input/output modules, motor drive control interfaces, and isolated fieldbus links—as well as digital data communications where ground loop elimination is critical. The HCPL-0631 is also widely used in microprocessor system interfaces operating in noisy environments and in avionics or defense subsystems demanding high common-mode transient immunity. From a procurement standpoint, this device remains a widely supported commercial product; however, long-lifecycle programs should verify the supplier’s lifetime roadmaps and consider manufacturing continuity for the SOP-8 package. For high-reliability environments, designers may investigate Broadcom’s extended-temperature or AEC-Q100 qualified variants, or evaluate parts with additional screening and traceability documentation to meet stringent industrial or aerospace-grade requirements.
